Lavonne Marie and Henry Cook Morgan Jr.

Lavonne Marie MORGAN 11/17/1920 ~ 07/04/2010 Henry Cook MORGAN, Jr. 09/27/1917 ~ 02/16/2011 Lavonne was born in Spokane, the only child of Evelyn Blackburn. She attended Holy Names Academy and graduated from Broadway High School. She attended the University of Washington. She met her husband at Wilson's Modern Business School in Seattle. They were happily married for 67 years. Lavonne was noted for her strong faith, joyful heart, peaceful spirit, mild manner and gift of service. She went from "city girl to farmers' wife." She was a wonderful baker: sponge cake, breads and pies were her specialties. She mastered cooking, preserving, money management, and nurturing her family of nine children. She happily drove those children in her "Big Red Van" to myriad school and sporting events. She loved having a large family and welcomed their friends into the fold. She worked elections at Maplewood Heights Elementary in Renton. She drove a mini bus for special needs children in the Renton school district. For recreation, Lavonne bowled for years with her mother at Hillcrest and Skyway Park Bowls. She enjoyed exotic birds kept in an aviary on the back deck and was a friend to stray cats. She loved vacationing at the family cabin on Hood Canal. Henry was born to Lillie and Henry C. Morgan, Sr. in Seattle. He had an older sister, Sylvia Van Woerden, and a younger brother, William (Bill) Morgan, both now deceased. He entered the family flower business by age eight, helping raise and sell flowers at a stall on the Pike Place Market. He attained the rank of Eagle Scout with the Boy Scouts of America and volunteered as troop #350 leader in Foster. He was a voracious reader and always said he had his advanced degree from Knocks College ("the school of hard knocks"). He loved hiking and fishing. He particularly enjoyed hunting elk in the Clearwater River area of the Olympic Peninsula. In September, 1942, Henry enlisted in the U.S. Navy Reserves. He served in Pasco as an aviation ordinance instructor before transferring aboard the U.S.S. Cape Esperance (CVE 88) for service in the South Pacific during WWII. He survived several typhoons and was instrumental in saving his ship from a kamikaze attack by rapid recognition of a new Japanese plane silhouette and giving the order to fire immediately to his gun crew. An avid story teller, he often drew upon these naval experiences. He worked as a truck driver, initially delivering oil, then milk. Later, he hauled the spent grains (malt) from the Rainier Brewery to Snohomish and Green River Valley farms for cattle feed. He was nicknamed "Henry, the Malt Man" and enjoyed lifelong close relationships with his customers. Henry was an avid gardener until he was 92, growing the flowers that provided his children with money for their college educations. He was a Master Gardener and an active member of the Seattle Tree Fruit Society. He always grew a large vegetable garden. His greatest legacies are the gifts of a strong work ethic, honesty, practical education, can-do attitude, sense of humor and diligence. The Morgan's are survived by daughters Janet Honda, Joanna Lescroart, Paula Luedke, and Leslie Morgan-Green, and sons Dwight, Bruce, John, Daniel and James, seventeen grandchildren and eighteen great grandchildren. Their "adopted children" include Jack Hendrickson, Kent Hutchings and Glen Bunzelmeir. Internment will be with military honors at the Tahoma National Cemetery (18600 SE 240th, Kent) on Friday, March 11th, at 2:30p.m. A Catholic Mass will be said at St. John Vianney Catholic Church (12600 84th Ave NE, Kirkland) on Saturday, March 12th at 10:00 A.M. Receptions to follow.

TERUKO OGATA DANIEL

Born and raised in Pasco, WA, 'Teddie' spent the majority of her 81 years here. Her last three weeks were under the wonderful care of the fine staff at Kadlec Hospital, where she passed away peacefully with her devoted husband by her side at 1:07 p.m., Teddie was a very strong and dynamic middle daughter of the Pasco pioneer Ogata family of 7 girls and 2 boys. All of her siblings were born in Pasco. However, growing up during the war years was horrible at times for Japanese Americans. Rather than being sent to relocation camps during the war like their friends who lived in Kennewick and Richland, the Japanese American families in Pasco, on the north side of the Columbia River dividing line, continued to work and attend schools in Pasco, but had a guard outside their homes every night after curfew. While many people in the Pasco community were very kind to the Japanese families, they suffered much discrimination during this time period., She was a highly capable student at Whittier Elementary, Longfellow Jr. High and graduated from Pasco High School with honors in 1947. She would later return to Pasco High to teach English. Teddie attended Pacific University in Forest Grove, OR and earned an English Literature Degree, with honors. She also earned a scholarship at Claremont College in CA for a Master's Degree in Japanese Literature. She taught high school English in OR at Mitchell and Astoria, then returned to teach at Pasco High where she met math teacher, Russell Daniel. They were married July 18, 1963 and shared a wonderful life together. Teddie and Russ spent 27 years in Bremerton where she taught English and Foreign Literature at Olympic Junior College until her retirement. During the last few years of Teddie's teaching career, Russell built a retirement home for them in Pasco's Desert Plateau. In addition to her long teaching career, she coached girls' basketball in OR and was Pasco High's 'Sinewesah' year book advisor. Teddy was active in women's rights, politics and was on the WA State Commission on Asian Affairs. She was also a published poet., Those who preceded her in death were parents, Sadakuma and Kazuni; daughter, Mallory; brother, George; sisters, Ikuko and Kyoko., She is survived by husband, Russell; sisters, Yoko Hayashi, Sadako Toyoda, Marian Ogata, Aileen Ogata-Mendoza; brother, Ted (Connie) Ogata.

Thaddeus Richard (Dick) Perry

Thaddeus Richard (Dick) PERRY Thaddeus Richard (Dick) Perry passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 1, 2010, surrounded by his kids. He was 89 years old. Dick was well known for hissense of humor and kindness. He loved animals, especially dogs, treating trips abroad as opportunities to pet dogs of all nationalities. He and his wife, Elaine, who passed away in 1998, had a variety of screwball terriers through the years. Dick was born on February 20, 1922 on Capitol Hill in Seattle. He attended St. Joseph's grade school and Broadway high school. He was a member of Zeta Psi Fraternity at the University of Washington where he met Elaine, a member of Alpha Gamma Delta. Both were Husky football fans and season ticket holders for over 50 years. From the UW ROTC program, he entered World War II and served in the Quartermaster Corps in Patton's third army, ending his army career as a Captain. After the war, Dick was recruited by his father, Thaddeus, and brothers Jack and Bob to help run the family wholesale food business, Perry Brothers, where Dick had worked as a kid. Dick was one of the first to introduce fine European deli cheeses and meats to Pacific Northwest supermarkets in the 1970's. Perry Brothers was bought by Kraft Foods in 1986, and Dick retired in 1988. After his retirement, Dick and Elaine enjoyed their dream house, formerly the site of a Perry family cabin, on the Puget Sound in Des Moines, WA. Dick had spent his childhood summers at the cabin and his heart was never far from the beach he loved so much. As a teenager, he would hitchhike from Capitol Hill to the beach to spend weekends at the cabin; as an adult, he took daily summer swims in the Sound into his sixties. We will never forget his graciousness, his humor, and especially his compassion: he spent many years caring for Elaine as she became progressively weaker with MS. His number one priority was always his family. He wasa devout Catholic and very supportive of his parish and grandchildrens' schools. Dick was preceded in death by his wife Elaine, his brothers Jack and Bob, and his sister Margaret. Dick is survived by his children Mark (Linda Hartzell), Lynn (Dan) Winkelmann, Tim (Shaun), and Katie (Terry) Donohue; grandchildren Adam Hartzell; Ryan (Danielle), Caitlin, and Andy Winkelmann; Betsy and Matt Perry; Shelly, Nicolette, and Kris Donohue; his sister-in-laws, Lillian Perry and Phyllis (Don) Gill; his brother-in-law Jerry (Betty) Ellering; and his cat Jake. He also had many nieces and nephews who loved him very much. On Monday, March 7, 2011, a Rosary will be held at St. Philomena Church at 10:30 AM, followed by a memorial Mass at 11:00 AM. William W. Clarke

William W. CLARKE 1925 ~ 2011 Bill died but we speak of him in the present tense because he remains in the hearts and heads of his family and friends. We will remember him for his humor, his sense of justice, his constancy and compassion. A native of Berkeley, California, Bill served in the Pacific during World War II and graduated with a degree in Journalism from the University of Washington. Bill was a newspaper reporter, public relations man for the Apollo moon-shot rockets and the roll out of the Boeing 747. He was woodworker, novelist, mariner and boat builder. He and his wife of 63 years, Barbara, amazed family and friends when they retired in their fifties and built a 50-foot wooden ketch from the centerline up. They lived aboard "Fortune" for twenty plus years on Lake Union and sailed the inland waters of Washington and Canada. Bill was a fixer of anything and could turn a chunk of wood into a beautiful and functional piece of art. He had a keen taste for beer and the New York Times crossword puzzle which he completed daily. Bill left a legacy of lighthearted playfulness and a serious, compassionate attention to those he encountered as well as for fairness and equality in the world. Bill is survived by; his wife Barbara, daughters Mallory, Lucy, and Ann; Lucy's husband Larry Hendel, Ann's partner Rob Komoto, grandchildren Kellen, Rachael and Riley and a myriad of nephews, nieces, in-laws and fans.
