Betty Jane Klein

Betty Jane Klein, 81, of Arlington, gently passed into the arms of Jesus on March 9, 2011. Betty's gentle spirit, love of family and caring nature were evident until the final hours of her life, which were spent surrounded by family, friends, and the caring staff of the Palliative Care Team at Providence Hospital., She was born in Liberal, KS on February 3, 1930 to Douglas and Luella Woolen. During the Depression, Betty's parents moved their three children west in search of work, eventually settling in Arlington. With Betty, her sister (Billie) and brother (Jack) in school, her father supported the family building power lines on Seattle City Light's Skagit River hydro projects. The family attended the Gospel Hall in Arlington, and there Betty met the young man who would become her lifetime love and partner. Elmer Klein was part of a big Snohomish County dairy family. Elmer was forever captivated by Betty's stylishness and grace., The marriage of Betty and Elmer in Everett on April 30, 1946 set her on a challenging and joy-filled path that lasted for the rest of her life. The early years were a struggle to make ends meet. Betty worked briefly in a clothing store, but the demands of motherhood and farming were strong. Betty was busy helping Elmer milk their growing herd of dairy cows the morning their first child, Sandi, was born in 1947., Betty and Elmer worked a series of Arlington-area dairy farms while their family grew with son Dan and daughter Barbara. In 1969, the couple was blessed with their youngest child, Teresa. In 1964, the family left farming and moved to Lake Stevens. When the dairying bug again bit the Kleins in 1969, they returned to Arlington and purchased a large dairy on the Stillaguamish River. Betty never had to travel far to enjoy fun-filled summer days with family and friends down by the river. At the Stillaguamish farm, Betty pursued her love of gardening by raising champion roses. After selling the Stillaguamish dairy to son Dan and wife Pam, Betty and Elmer retired to their home in Arlington. They spent the winter months with family and friends at their second home in sunny Southern California. Betty's family was her greatest joy., In addition to husband, Elmer, those who will remember her with the deepest love and affection are sister, Billie Klein; daughter, Sandi Dollar, son, Dan Klein (Pam), daughter, Barbara Klein (Gary Larson), daughter, Teresa Dunn; grandchildren Jami Adams, Jason Klein, Marneye Dollar (fiance Tyson Driesen), Brady Dunn, and Casey Dunn; great-grandchildren, Damon Adams, Dylan Adams and Demri Adams., Betty was preceded in death by parents, Douglas and Luella Woolen; brother, Jack Woolen, and half brother, Dean Woolen., Viewing will be at Weller's Funeral Home, 327 N. Billie Marguerite Shinnick

Billie Marguerite (Doxey Jewell) Shinnick was born November 22, 1918 in Cornation, Canada where her parents, Glen and Ruby Doxey, were homesteading. Her father died the next day from the flu and named the baby girl "Billie" since he had wanted a boy. Billie graduated from high school in Underwood, North Dakota and then went to work for a family in Minneapolis. She cooked, cleaned and looked after the children for two years in order to save enough money to pay for her three-year hospital-nursing course at St. Michael's in Grand Forks, ND. She graduated in 1943 and went to work as a pediatric RN. She once convinced a doctor to reduce a too-large dose of penicillin for a baby by telling him he would have to come in to the hospital to administer it himself. In 1945 she met Raymond Michael Shinnick, an Army veteran who had seen action at Guadalcanal and Bougainville. They married at Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Reynolds, ND where they took up farming and raising a family of five girls. In 1955 they moved the family to Vancouver, WA where Ray bought a share in the Ft. Vancouver Plywood Company and Billie worked part-time as an RN at St. Joseph's Hospital., Billie was an extrovert. With so many activities and friends, it was hard to find her at home. She loved quilting, painting and ceramics and gave many of her creations to family and friends where they adorned beds, walls and coffee tables. She belonged to the Catholic Daughters, St. James Altar Society, Columbia River Old Time Strings, Salmon Creek Grange and Clark County Quilters. She loved singing and playing her guitar and entertaining at nursing homes. She sang with her family and would have her five girls crying with Old Shep and laughing with He's Moving On. Her 13 grandchildren enjoyed her homemade cookies, fried bread and sticky buns. While not as active by the time the 27 great-grandchildren had arrived, she still could play and sing their favorite songs like My Little Rooster and Who Broke the Lock on the Hen House Door. Friday nights at Grandma Billie's was the high point of the week for the Shinnick clan's children especially. J. P. Seabeck

Our dear father, cowboy-entrepreneur, generous provider, friend, church-builder, son, brother, grandfather, and husband, James Paul Seabeck, longtime resident of Spokane, Washington, passed away March 9 at the age of 98. Cow-puncher Jim has ridden off into the sunset on his palomino "Golden Avalanche" to join his beautiful, green-eyed "filly" Novia, his wife of 72 years. She is waiting for him "in their new home" as she told him a few days before she left him just over 3 years ago. He asked if it was "a ranch" and she said, "J.P., it will be what you always wanted, sorry I am going first"., Born in Rockville, Nebraska on January 21, 1913 to John and Mary Seabeck who raised 7 children in the Polish-German homestead of 3 rooms where Polish was spoken, more than not. Jimmy was only 4 the night his father, John, raised him from sleep to hold a lantern for the birth of a calf. The seeds were planted; the son was soon raising his own hogs. Mother Mary instilled discipline, religion, determination, prayer and family dedication, which she honed to proud high Polish traits. Father John dealt him many a lesson on walking that tight rope of life., Turning a penny to a dollar showed early with his purchase of a goat. He managed to earn a profit though the goat broke a window twice and ate the lining of the family car; "the Goat" escapade gave a profit of $7, diligently banking $3.50 in each of the town's banks at 8 years of age. Cash, no debts was his mentor. He did not spend what he did not have, the credit part of the American Dream he did not buy into., His father owned a small butcher shop and as a small boy Jim was given many of the menial tasks and a natural given talent sparked his life devotion to the livestock business creating many improvements in the industry., Jim captained his high school football and basketball teams. In his senior year he was All-State running back. After graduation he attended Grand Island Nebraska Business College for 6 months., Next step was 6 months with Harris Grain & Livestock in Grand Island feedlot. He grabbed an opportunity offered him as a range cowboy in Colorado on the W.C. Harris Ranch. Jim was seasoned fast by senior cowpokes leaving him in charge of the herd of 50 head of cattle while they went to "drink---n in town". A lightning-front came in full force. All alone, Jim tired-out 3 horses trying his 18 year old best, to keep the herd together. W.C. Harris soon realized his potential & transferred him to the "feed lot" in Twin Falls, ID. At age 19, he was in charge of 40,000 head of cattle. His bed and his office where one and the same-¦a very small shed the size of a twin bed. It was a short stint in the feedlot where he was soon scouted and hired by Carstens Meat Packing Co. of Tacoma, Washington., A blind date began our parents long love story. On June 8, 1935, he married his green-eyed sweetheart, Miss Novia George Church, a woman with fashion model looks and Oklahoma cowgirl toughness. The young couple headed to Tacoma, Washington. Honeymoon night dinner was baloney, bread and milk. Arriving in Tacoma with $17 dollars in their pockets, they worried how to keep the wedding secret because the new job stipulated Jim must be unmarried. Mom's Jimmy at age 20 had accepted the position as Jr. cattle buyer at the back gate. Just one year later, at age 21, he was promoted to head buyer for all Carstens Packing Company's livestock division, retaining that position for 21 years and also serving as General Manager for 3 years., On a California cattle buying trip in 1941, J.P. bet his "lodging & food money" on Seabiscuit in the famous Santa Anita Race, sparking a lifetime passion for horses and horse racing. He started with Golden Avalanche a palomino from Montana, riding him in the feedlots at Carstens. Thoroughbred horse racing became his hobby, breeding, raising, and racing many successful horses until the age of 95. Approximately 100 winning horses were raised and raced. He co-owned with Phil Carstens, "Ocean Mist", the horse that won the 1953 Longacres Mile. Jim devoted long hours and much personal effort to help initiate a parimutuel betting system in the state of Idaho and he worked equally hard to firmly establish horse racing in Washington State., After 22 extremely successful years and after the Carstens business was sold, Jim started his own meat supply business in Tacoma, the Riverside Meat Co., providing the very best cuts of meat to Tacoma's favorite restaurants such as, Johnny's Dock, Poodle Dog, and Top of the Ocean., In 1941 he was invited to Washington D.C. to represent 10 western States to enact a provision for all Meat Packers to abide to, requiring them to only pay prices for livestock that could only be sold at prices set by government to alleviate Black Marketing., In 1959, he purchased along with Tom and Phil Carstens and Lee Benton the Twin Falls Livestock Commission Company in Idaho. Jim and Novia, with young daughters Connie & Kristi in tow, moved back to their beginnings. Under J.P.'s management and leadership, Twin Falls Livestock Commission Company became once again the largest livestock auction venue in Idaho. He also founded the Twin Falls Feeding Company with Pete Gillman., In 1960, he founded the Southern Idaho Livestock Hall of Fame, which continues today to honor those people that leave a lasting imprint on the livestock industry and the economy of Southern Idaho. Jim himself was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1974. During this time Claude Wilhite joined Jim's outfit and he was to be his right hand man in Twin Falls and later in Spokane at Stockland Union Stockyards. Jim always said Claude was important in the success of both livestock auctions yards., In 1964, J.P. Seabeck sold the livestock auction business in Twin Falls and moved to Spokane where he purchased the local auction yards which had hit rock bottom. As the new President & owner of Stockland Union Stockyards, he once again devoted himself to creating the leading livestock market in the Northwest for ranchers and farmers in the panhandle of Idaho, western Montana, and eastern Washington. This was accomplished by a policy of hard work (his favorite words), in depth knowledge of all species of livestock, and the strong desire to help all people in the livestock industry. He often expressed that the key to his success was a personal touch with the ranchers and farmers, from the big guys to the little guys-¦ investing long hours into his ever-growing business. J.P. (Jim's) motto was "service is the rent we pay for the space we occupy in this world"., Both smart and clever, not much slipped past him. We have come to believe that his intuition played a major role in his success. When an opportunity presented itself he moved fast, often out-smarting others. His word was his bond which was sealed the old fashion way, by a handshake., James was the initial financial backer and co-owner of the tremendously successful restaurant chain in California simply called, "Cattlemens", still going strong since 1968. He also helped bring the Sizzler chain of restaurants into the State of Washington., James Seabeck served 38 years on the board of LMA-American Livestock Association; a Kansas City based trade group for the nation's livestock auction markets, and served as president, 1993-1994. He was president of Western Meat Packers Assoc. for 5 years. He built a feed yard for the country of Lebanon and made 11 trips there., The U.S. Department of Agriculture awarded him the "Best Livestock operation in the West". He was an avid supporter of the annual Spokane Jr. Livest

Kenneth S. Hawkes

Kenneth S. HAWKES July 26, 1910 ~ March 2, 2011 Born July 26, 1910 in Ballard, as the only son of mariner Thomas Henry Hawkes and his wifeKate, Ken lived life to the fullest; an outdoorsman, a successful businessman, friend to many and beloved patriarch of his family. Ken's working life started at an early age working as a milk delivery boy on Hanson's horse drawn milk cart, selling newspapers off the street car, working as a summer golf caddy and a delivery boy for Turrell's Shoe Store. He graduated from Ballard High School in 1928 with shorthand and bookkeeping skills, and got a job at Northwestern Mutual Insurance as an office boy. He moved into claims, became an adjuster and was in charge of the claims department for Washington at age 28. He moved up the ladder in responsibility and importance to the company. In the 50s, he was promoted to VP of National Claims, and in the 60s he was promoted to Executive Vice President of the company, now called Uniguard Insurance. He was elected to the board in 1970, and retired in 1974. Ken was known as a very hard driving, efficient and hard working person. He tried to hire the best and he expected the best. As a young man, Ken played horseshoes and handball with the firemen at the Ballard Firehouse, and in 1929 the Captain introduced him to his daughter, Winifred Wright. Ken dated and married only one woman in his life, his proudest accomplishment was to be married to Winifred Hawkes for 73 magnificent years. Winnie became Ken's beloved bride on July 14th 1934; they made Seattle their home and began raising their two children, Larry and Judy. In 1947, the Hawkes family moved to the Eastside near the home of Winnie's parents and created a 10-acre ranch and beautiful country home. Ken and his son, Larry, worked on improving the Bridlewood home for two years before the whole family moved east. Once moved in, they cleared land for pasture and built a new barn for horses, put in a pool and outdoor kitchen. This home, horseback riding, swimming in the pool, and the wonderful welcome and warmth shared by Ken and Winnie were an endless joy for generations of family and friends. Ken was an outdoorsman and enjoyed boating, horses, fishing, golf, swimming and all types of adventures. He was skipper of The Thomas Henry for over 40 years and his family and friends have treasured memories of many voyages. During retirement Ken and Winnie enjoyed winters in Maui. Ken enjoyed golf year round - consistently scoring in the low 80s at Kapalua and other challenging courses. Ken was a man that never looked back or worried over the past. He met change with solutions, not complaints, and prided himself on decision-making and action. He enjoyed challenges and was very enthused about LIFE.He was a consummate do it yourself man, an enthusiastic boater, poet, storyteller, voracious reader, prankster and great host. Embodying the gentlemen's code, he imparted his integrity, ambition and hope for the future in everyone he met. All were encouraged to reach farther, dream bigger and to always hope for the best. Ken was an immense positive force in the lives of his family and friends. His grandchildren, great grandchildren, extended family members and friends will continue to live with the countless memories of a wonderful life and adventures he shared. Ken passed peacefully into heaven March 2nd surrounded by his grandchildren and son-in-law. His wife Winnie, his children Judy and Larry, and his sisters Lucille, Geraldine and Clarice preceded Ken in death. Private family services will be held at the farm in Bridlewood.
