Richard Glen "Dick" Garvey of Bow, Washington passed away at his home on March 2, 2011 at the age of 58, from colon cancer., Dick was born August 9, 1952 at Wenatchee, Washington to Glen and Irma Garvey. He attended Monitor Grade school for seven years., His father worked for the Great Northern railroad and Dick got to spend time at the depot in Cashmere where he developed an affection for all things railroad. In 1964 Dick's father was transferred to Anacortes and the family moved there where Dick graduated from high school in 1970. By this time the photo bug had bitten him and his parents' home was decorated with photographs taken with his Pentax 35mm camera., Dick attended the Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara, California and earned a bachelors degree. It was there that he honed his technical skills that would enable him to express his own vision that some people call the "Garveyesque" school., After college Dick always made his home in the Anacortes/Skagit valley area. Dick's large format photographs have been exhibited throughout the Northwest and beyond and he is well known in the arts community and many would say, is an icon. Besides sharing his vision he was very generous in helping others make their own statements. Dick taught at colleges, seminars and many people have benefitted from his wit and wisdom., On August 9, 2001 Dick married Candy DuBuque and this time he got it right, finally finding the love of his life. Candy filled Dick with love and family and added a wonderful step-daughter to Dick's life., Survived by Dick include his wife, Candy at home; his step-daughter Heidi; brother, Jim Low; sister, Donna Low Heinrich of Wenatchee; brother, Pat Garvey of Colville, WA; and brother, Jeff of DeKalb, IL. Robert John Wahl

Robert John WahlRobert John Wahl left the earth to be with Jesus on March 7, 2011., Born September 17, 1959 in Arlington, WA, Robert ("Bob") was a loving husband, father, hunter, fisherman, farmer and golfer. He enjoyed the Seahawks and Mariners, tolerated the Titans, Raiders and Chiefs, and aspired to drive a ball like "lefty" Phil Mickelson. For Bob, a good box of Merlot ("mur-lawt") paired perfectly with a late night game of ship-captain-crew; it made for a wonderful evening., Bob could fix anything - we liked to call it "Oke" engineering. He was the MacGyver that we all wanted to be. He touched so many people and will be deeply missed., Bob is survived by his loving wife, Cheryl; trusty puppy companion, Codie Bear Wahl; his daughter and son-in-law, Gina and Trevor Nisbet; his daughter and son-in-law, Julie and Jeff Fowler; parents, George and Ruth Wahl; brothers, LD and Dan; sister, Cheryl Wahl; and his sister and brother-in-law, Terri and Evan Woods. STEPHEN J. NIVEN

AN EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMAN, Born June 12, 1923 to Margaret Devlin Niven and Stephen James Niven, Steve was the oldest of four children., Predeceased by his parents and brother Raymond Jerome, he is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Edna; their four children, Joanne, Amy, Stephen Jr. and Daniel; 11 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and his sisters, Lorraine Ruhl and Margaret McNelis., Stephen J. Niven, who graced this Earth for the past 87 years, died March 8th after complications from a fall near his home in Mount Vernon., Born in a tenement in the Bronx on June 12, 1923, our Dad was an outstanding student and athlete at DeWitt Clinton High School, and met his future wife when they both worked at the Wall Street law firm Sullivan and Cromwell., Enlisting in the US Marine Corps, he served with distinction in the Pacific during World War II. After the war, Steve and Edna settled first in Massachusetts, then moved to Pennsylvania, Washington DC, and California as their family grew and fortunes rose while Steve worked as a sales manager for Springs Mills, Inc., In California, Steve enjoyed sailing, gardening, and traveling, and he acquired a taste for modern art, fine wine, and theater. After retiring from Spring Mills, Steve and Edna moved to LaConner in 1989 where Steve became active in the Kiwanis Club, eventually becoming its president and leading several community fundraisers and supervising the building of the John Hammer playground., They moved to Mount Vernon in 2005 to be closer to St. Paul's Episcopal Church, where Steve was a very active member and church community leader., Although his health was declining in the months leading up to his fall, Steve made it clear that he knew his life had been full, fascinating, and fortunate. He was one half of one of the great love stories of the 20th and 21st centuries, and his devotion to Edna was inspiring to all that saw them together. Steve was lucky enough to find his true love as a teenager, and his marriage to Edna was the greatest success in his very successful life. Not long before he passed away, Steve looked deep in her eyes and said, "I'm not going anywhere without you." Well, on March 8th he did - but his warmth, kindness, quick wit, charm, wisdom, and tremendous generosity have been left to everyone who was fortunate enough to know him - and his presence will go everywhere with them. His character and his influence on his children was powerful and profound, and they will never walk without him. Steve often ended his very entertaining letters to friends and family with the message "Be kind to each other." A very simple notion that was a very large part of him. The world is a little darker now that he's moved on, but we are blessed that he will forever be a part of us., In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Mount Vernon, WA or the charity of your choice., A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 2, 2011, 3:00 pm at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Mount Vernon., Arrangements are under the care of Hawthorne Funeral Home, Mount Vernon.
