Elizabeth Meta Alma "Beth" Smith

Passed away peacefully on March 17, 2011. She will be deeply missed by all who were blessed by her zest for life and compassion for others. Beth was born on December 30, 1924 in Deer Park, WA as the eighth of ten children to Frederick and Johanna Knauft. Her life story is one of remarkable perseverance, faith, and love. Beginning at age five with the untimely death of her mother, Beth and her remaining eight siblings learned early to live with little and to mature quickly. As a single parent, her father placed Beth and her siblings in the care of other families with limited success. Beth eventually came to live with her father and two younger siblings in Spokane where she learned parental skills, humility, and deep gratitude. As a graduate of J.R. Rogers High School (1943), she attended Walla Walla College and earned a teaching certificate in Elementary Education from Eastern Washington College of Education (1947). Her many joys in life often came from her family, friends and spiritual faith. She married the love of her life, Walter (Bud) Smith in 1950. Together they raised and loved three boys, enjoyed dogs, snow skied, traveled, and nurtured robust gardens of vegetables, fruits, and flowers. She was committed to the future of her boys and did all that she could to send them to college and to support them with abiding love and encouragement. When grandchildren arrived, she enthusiastically took them under her wings and loved them as well. Each grandchild has lasting and special memories of Beth that they will carry in their hearts forever. After several years raising three sons with Bud, she returned to her passion for teaching children as a substitute in the Spokane school system. Before long, she was teaching full time. Her careers culminated with her longest tenure of 17 years guiding 4th graders at Regal Elementary School in northeast Spokane. Underlying Beth's life was an enduring and precious spiritual faith. She was an active member of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church (S.D.A) for over fifty years, spending much of that time with the members of Spokane Central S.D.A Church. During the last decade of her life, Beth struggled with Alzheimer's disease, but through it all, her resilient spirit, heart of gold, and compassion for others were empowering, sustaining and a source of comfort to all. Beth's final three years were spent in the special company and loving care of staff at her new home at "Classy Retreat" in southwest Spokane. She was preceded in death by her husband (Bud, 2009), four brothers (William, Arthur, Rudy, Alfred), and sister (Helen). Surviving Beth are her brothers Emil Knauft (Boise, ID) and Henry Knauft (Spokane); sisters Doretta Moreno (Temple City, CA), and Martha Carmen (Davenport, WA); and three sons: Scott (Seattle, WA; Michaele (wife), Conrad, Nathaniel); George (Spokane, WA, Karen (wife), Elizabeth, Hanna); and Gerry (Minneapolis, MN; Elizabeth (wife), Ada, Zoe, Ema). Beth's ardent love of life and genuine compassion for others and for the beauty of the earth with live on in the hearts and minds of all whose lives she touched so profoundly. Visitation will be Tuesday, March 22, 2011 from 12-8pm at the funeral home. Funeral services will be Wednesday, March 23, 2011 at 10am, also at the funeral home, with committal to follow at Spokane Memorial Gardens. George W. Johnson

George W JOHNSON December 22, 1912 ~ March 10, 2011 The oldest working real-estate broker in the United States, George W. Johnson, 98, of Seattle, died on March 10, 2011, from complications of pulmonary fibrosis. Up until 6 weeks ago, he was still driving himself to his Ballard office, George W. Johnson Realtors, and working 6-hour days. Alan Schauffler of King 5 News, commenting in his 2007 Up Front feature of George called him 'The Oracle of Ballard' a moniker he proudly embraced to his final days. George was born in Wessington, SD, on December 22, 1912, to Oscar and Johanna Johnson who were both Danish Immigrants. The second of 4 brothers, George grew up on the family farm and spent his youth helping his father with the family homestead and learning the value of hard work. He met and married Clarice A. Scandrett in 1933, while they were both attending a small Free Methodist college in South Dakota. He left South Dakota in 1934 after being recruited by the President of Seattle Pacific College (now SPU) to finish his last two years at SPC's growing Seattle campus. He earned his tuition by rising every morning at 4am to work as the school's baker. His parents followed him to Seattle, and after George completed his college degree in 1936, he and his father started a dairy farm in the Broadview neighborhood of N. Seattle, where Viewlands Elementary School sits today. After graduation - and never afraid of hard work - George delivered milk before going off to work as an elementary school teacher in White Center. After sending $5 to Olympia for a real estate license, he started selling homes, in the evenings, from a real estate office on 15th Ave NW in Ballard. His Ballard office continues on the same land as that original office. He was an early pioneer in the Real Estate Industry, and was a career-long, 75+ year member of the National Association of Realtors. He was equally proud of his life long involvement with First Free Methodist Church, Seattle. George's commitments to his family, to his church, and to hard work were the prized benchmarks of his life. George was married to Clarice until her death in Jan. 1993. Then at 81 years of age he found the second love of his life in his widowed sister-in-law, Esther Johnson. In late 1993 George & Esther were married and spent 17 wonderful years together until her passing at age 101 in 2010. George cherished these years with his beloved Esther and loved this time spent with his new extended family. He was preceded in death byhis parents and brothers, Walter, Elmer and John.George is survived by his loving children and step children, Jim Johnson and his wife Barbara; Joybelle Johnson-Eriks and her husband Paul Eriks; Karen Johannsen; Robert Johnson and his wife Karen Hoven; JoAnne McDonald; Carolyn Murphy and her husband Gerald; and Janet Henkel. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren and 6 great-great-grandchildren. Service will be held at First Free Methodist Church Sunday 3/20 at 1:00 p.m., 3200 3rd Avenue West, Seattle. Memorial donations may be made to First Free Methodist Church, Seattle; the Clarice A Johnson Memorial Fund; Seattle Pacific University; Operation Night Watch Seattle; Warm Beach Health Care Center, 20420 Marine Dr, Stanwood, Wa 98292; or New Horizons Ministries, Seattle, Wa. The family would like to thank the wonderful medical care provided by Dr's George Pappas & James Coghland and Providence Hospice Care. Special thanks for the loving home care provided by extended family in his final weeks. Grandchildren Keri Pederson and Kurt Johnson lovingly handled a major portion of the care with patience and deep compassion. If history and habit is any predictor, 'Time to Get Up!!' will be among the first words spoken by dad as he greets his long unseen family and loved ones. Geraldine May Swigart

Geraldine May Swigart, our red headed beautiful mother, left us on Mar. 7, 2011 at the age of 88 to be with Robert, the love of her life, on the dance floor of heaven. She was born on October 31, 1922 in Long Beach, California to Frank and Jennie (Carr) Jones. She was raised in California with seven siblings. After she graduated from Long Beach Polytechnic High School she met Robert at a dance. They were married in 1942 before Robert was deployed as a pilot overseas during WWII. They were together for 68 amazing years and lived in Southern California before moving to Bellingham in 2003 to be near their children. Geraldine and Robert worked hard and in turn lived the good life, raising their children in the midst of S. California beaches, camping in Big Sur, and taking early morning drives to Las Vegas. Robert would frequently take Geraldine out on the town: she, a lovely red head on his arm; he, a tall, dashing dark haired man. Wherever they went, many a head would turn to watch them high step it on the floor. They were often mistaken for entertainment stars Jayne Meadows and Steve Allen. In the early 1970's Geraldine had fun working in a fashionable boutique on the Princess Louise in San Pedro Harbor. She was also attracted to the unusual pursuit of 'Hand Analysis'. It was her hobby for more than 50 years and she accumulated a vast amount of information on anything to do with hands. She examined the hand as a whole and was an expert in determining health, career and personality traits. She loved people and it was one of her greatest pleasures to hold a person's hand and tell them things about themselves as it invariably led to lively discussions of ideas and adventures. A popular entertainer and lecturer at conventions, corporate and private parties, she was interviewed for many magazine and newspaper articles, did radio and TV appearances and worked at Magic Island in Newport Beach. Another hobby was telling jokes. She was still 'reading hands' and telling jokes in the last weeks of her long life. A sparkling personality with a zest for life, Geraldine was vivacious, beautiful, meticulous, charming and fun. She was a bundle of activity, insightful and affectionate to those who knew her well. In addition to dancing, she enjoyed playing cards, listening to music, reading horoscopes out loud, traveling, reading, walking, treasure hunting at thrift stores, having parties, and going out to dinner. The joy and brightness she brought to our lives will be with us always. Geraldine was preceded in death by her dear husband Robert, brothers Marshall and Shirley Jones, her sisters Goldie Stark and Gladys King; brother-in-law Paul Swigart and sister-in-law Hallie Buckley. She is missed by her loving children June (Dennis) Veith, Jilly Eddy (Marsha Kremen), Connie (Garry) Swigart-Harris and Doug (Jessie) Mason Swigart; grandchildren Robert (Eshinee) Veith, Lawrence (Suzanne) Veith, Daniel Swigart- Harris and Katharine Swigart-Harris; great-grandchild-ren Sammy, Ben and Lily Veith; sisters Virginia Kane, Vera Gillespie and brother Don Jones, sister-in law Edna Rocha and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. The family would like to express special thanks to her caregivers Dawn Lunde and Paula Weh-len. In lieu of flowers, you may direct your memorials to the Whatcom Hospice House or a charity of your choice. A memorial service will be held at 3:30 pm Friday, March 25, at Moles Funeral Chapel followed by a reception. You may also share memories with the family at:

Marjorie Frost "Margie" Barnwell

Marjorie "Margie" Frost BARNWELL Marjorie was born August 19, 1926 in Seattle WA and passed peacefully on March 16, 2011 in Seattle. She is survived by her four children - Sherri Richardson, Debra Olason, John Barnwell and Lisa Barnwell-Monzon and her five grandchildren - David Wright, Jackie Ferry, Joshua Barnwell, Matthew Sharp and Natalie Sharp and great grandchild - Courtney Ferry. Marjorie was many things to many people and a complex, engaging individual. She attended grade school at Highland Park in West Seattle. While there, she was one fast mover on the playfield. Reportedly could easily outrun the boys. Ice skating was another passion in her earlier years. She graduated from West Seattle High school in 1944. She always took great pride in academic achievement and carried this love of excellence throughout her life. Margie passed this discipline onto her children. In addition to her school work - she excelled in writing. She loved to write poetry and she found herself in the role of a fierce advocate by all of her dedicated submissions over the years to the Seattle Time Troubleshooter column. She really knew how to blast an issue in favor of the disenfranchised. She carried this love of writing through a lifetime of correspondence with her close friends. Playing the piano was another favorite pastime. She also discovered a talent for drawing and sketching later in her life. Margie enjoyed square dancing as well and was a vision on the dance floor. Margie's skills as a seamstress were second to none and she also enjoyed embroidery. Not to be outdone by herself, her baking was legendary particularly her pumpkin pie. Her onetime millionaire employer beseeched her for her potato salad recipe including a price tag and, believe it or not, she declined. Professionally, Margie's focus was secretarial and reception. She was employed at numerous companies over the years including Frasier Boiler, Dulien Steel, the Army Corp of Engineers and Washington Machinery. She took great pride in her work and was a credit to her profession. Margie was singularly a class act. She took great pride in her accomplishments. Her family and friends describe her as elegant, taking great pride in her attire, favoring dresses when most women were in pant suits. She valued integrity and trust above all and was discerning in her friendships and loyal to a fault. She was like a fine novel - you had to take the time with the words of her personality to truly understand and appreciate all the vast layers of who she was and will always remain - to us - those who love her still. There will be a viewing at the Howden-Kennedy Funeral Home (3909 SW Alaska St, West Seattle) on Sunday, March 20 from 9AM to Noon, followed by a service at 1PM. Interment will be at the Tahoma National Cemetery in Kent on Tuesday, March 22 at 11:15AM. Please sign our guest book at www.Howden-Kennedy.com
