She earned a B.A. at Syracuse University and later, in her fifties, a Masters at the U.W.A dedicated artist and a keen observer of colors and textures in the natural world - she was fascinated by "infinite diversity in consistent pattern" - she produced hundreds of paintings all through her life, the last only days before her passing. Mary was a person of great determination who bested many obstacles on the path to her life's goals. As a child, she would scramble up the mountain behind her home, rappelling up the rusted cables in an abandoned quarry to reach the hemlocks at the mountain's peak, climb the tallest one, and swing in the breeze from its highest stem. She's up there now, swinging free at last.

Patricia Ann MacPherson

Patricia Ann MacPHERSON June 25, 1924 ~ March 19, 2011 It would take a world atlas to recount the travels of the lovely Patricia MacPherson, who died this Saturday after a long battle with cancer. Born on a dairy farm in Loyal Wisconsin, her musical family supported her in her first independent adventures into university. She graduated from the University of Minnesota with a degree in Home Economics in 1946. Her first career reflected her love of travel, which would remain with her always. She was a stewardess for North West airlines in the late 40's, and somewhere in the archives of Glamour Magazine, is a photo of her on the plane taken with Babe Ruth, as he flew Northwest. After her marriage to Tom MacPherson in Seattle, motherhood and family kept her busy as they became the parents of four in the early 1950's. As the children matured, she studied and obtained a real estate license in Seattle. In the 70's she began to travel and with her spirit of adventure, and made this her life's work. During the 80's she began an import/export trade from Thailand to Seattle. Eventually the travel and enterprise included China, Burma, and Hong Kong. With a shop near the design center in South Seattle, she was known as Haas Importers, Inc. She rode the early wave of trade from the Far East. A creative, talented and artistic woman, Patricia was devoted to her children. She tended her gardens in Seattle and on the Oregon coast. Patricia painted prolifically the last 15 years of her life. She loved fashion and design, teaching skills to her granddaughters. She was a student of Yoga, and taught classes in Seattle. The practice of Yoga was with her to the end, supporting the poise she maintained through the very last day of her life. During these days she had at her side, her three children, Tom MacPherson, of Gearhart, Oregon, Kelly MacPherson-Levy of New Rochelle, NY, and Kevin MacPherson of Seattle. One son, Brian MacPherson preceded her in death in 1995. She leaves six grandchildren, Alec MacPherson of Chicago, IL, Ellen MacPherson of St. Louis, Mo, and Laura, Elissa, and Brian Levy of New Rochelle, NY, and Modestas MacPherson of Seattle. Patricia was married to Thomas H. MacPherson in Seattle until 1974, which preceded her in death in 1995. Her husband, Jack Drummey, survives her, in Seattle. She is also survived by three sisters: Priscilla Knoblauch of St. Paul Minnesota, Pam Dolan, of Bothell, and Penny Kochiya of San Carlos, California. She was gracious, beautiful, and serene, and imparted her spirit to all of us who knew her. She will be profoundly missed. Her life will be celebrated at 11:00 AM on Saturday at Lake View Cemetery, 1554 15th Avenue E., Seattle. Arrangements entrusted to BONNEY-WATSON, 1732 Broadway, Seattle (206) 322-0013. Raymond O. Abendroth

Raymond O. ABENDROTH 1 April 1932 ~ 14 March 2011 Ray peacefully crossed over on Monday the 14th at 8:55 AM while at Evergreen Hospice Center in Kirkland, he was 78. Born in Salt Lake City, UT to Frank H. and Eva L. (Jones) Abendroth. Ray was raised in Seattle and graduated in 1950 from Queen Anne H.S. Soon after completing school he enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard, spending the bulk of his three year stint in the waters off Alaska. Not long after Ray left the service he met his future bride to be, Kathleen (Kathi) A. Judkins and in 1955 they were married, beginning what was to be a 56 year journey together. The year 1960 would mark the start of his career with the Seattle Fire Dept., working out of Station 8 on Queen Anne Hill. It turned out to be his dream job. If a career and a personality ever met their match, this was it. He loved every minute of the action, the public service, and the camaraderie of his fellow firefighters, no day was ever the same. Reluctantly, he was forced to retire in 1975 due to emphysema. What was Ray like? Well, he had a mischievous sense of humor and loved to tease you if he could, making someone laugh being the ultimate destination. Ray's thirst for nuggets of knowledge could only be quenched by immersing himself in things like his books, the History channel, and the Sunday paper. He liked hunting, fishing, and camping and at the end of the day a great camp fire as a gathering place to hang with friends and family. During his life Ray valued his friendships and many, many good times were had with all he knew. Family was always a primary concern and he always reached out to help those he loved. After World War II, where he served as a naval supply officer, he joined Ed and Harry Stuchell at the Eclipse Mill until May, 1962 when it was destroyed by fire. He was then chosen to be chairman of the newly formed Bank of Everett where he remained until it was sold in 1981., Bill served as president of the YMCA in 1954, chairman of the United Way in 1966 and was on the Providence Hospital Board for several years. He loved cribbage, and competing in general, and considered himself tops in the game. He was nicknamed Willie the Weep by some of his closest friends as a humorous way to relate to him when he lost, which was less often than not. He loved people and gave generously of his time and support to family, friends and community., Bill and Billie have had the good fortune of living adjacent to the Everett Golf and Country Club where they spent much of their leisure time. The story is that Bill's mother, Helen Stuchell Carpenter, helped to plant the first trees when the golf course was in its beginning stages.
