EARL RUSSELL ENGEL

Earl Russell Engel died at the age of 87 in Mt Vernon, Washington, on March 19, 2011. He was with family as he passed. Earl had a full life since his birth as an only child, in Manchester, Connecticut to Hans and Anna Engel on September 9, 1923., Going into the Navy in World War II, Earl was first a Gunner's Mate as an armed guard, on the Merchant Marine Ships, in the European Theater. In the second part of WW II, Earl was in the Pacific Theater as a Gunner's Mate near Okinawa., After the war, Earl and his life-long buddy, Bob Turkington, Bob's wife Carolyn and two other friends, changed their lives forever. Driving 1930 and 1931 Model A Fords, pulling trailers, the five friends drove up the Alkan Highway. The final destination was Homer, Alaska, arriving in 1949., After a short time of homesteading, Earl ended up back where he was most comfortable, on a boat and on the water. He fished first with Vaino Salo on the "Shirls" in 1950. Later he had his own Port Graham boat and commercial fished for salmon for many years., Earl met and married a local girl, Evelyn Faulk in December 1950. They were a team until her death in 2007, raising three children, Jerry, Judy and Pat. Evelyn and Jerry fished with Earl every summer., In winters, Earl and Bob bought two bulldozers and started Turkington and Engel Construction. This was the beginning of a new career that took him away from the sea; eventually he started working as a Superintendent in Heavy Construction. He worked with companies building roads, bridges and airports until he retired. He loved this work just as much as he loved the boats. One of his jobs took him back to Okinawa being a part of building the Kedena airport with Pomeroy M-B Construction., Earl and Evelyn moved to Stanwood Washington in 1979 although he commuted back and forth to Alaska until he retired in the mid 80's. They were the hub of family gatherings, for birthdays, holidays, picnics, and horse shows. Family and friends were the most important thing to Earl. In 2006 Earl and Evelyn moved to LaConner to be closer to most of the family., Those who knew Earl at any stage in his life would agree that he was a good and kind man, a gentleman beyond words. Honesty, honor, patriot, gentle, loving, with a strong code of ethics; these are only a few of the words to describe Earl. His love and devotion for his wife, his children, his grandchildren, his friends was solid and unwavering., Preceding Earl in death, were his parents, Hans and Anna Engel, his grandson Roger Engel, his wife Evelyn and his daughter Patricia Hagen., Earl is survived by his son Jerry Engel, his daughter Judy Taipale, thirteen grandchildren and their spouses, twenty great-grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren, ten nieces and nephews and many dear close friends., There will be a memorial at Sea, in the San Juans, later in the Spring, when family boats can gather. In lieu of flowers, the family would suggest donating to those less fortunate or to the Red Cross.

Josephine Walsh Frandsen

Josephine Walsh FRANDSEN Josephine Walsh Frandsen was born on March 15, 1923 in Seattle, WA and passed away on St. Patrick's Day, March 17, 2011 at her home in Freeland, WA. Josephine was the third of four daughters born to Joseph Francis Walsh and Catherine Grady Walsh of Roslyn, WA. Her sisters, Alice, Marie and Francis all preceded her in death. Josephine spent her early years in Roslyn; however when her mother suddenly passed away in 1928, her father, unable to raise four little girls on his own, split the family up. Josephine went to live with friends in Olympia, WA. Two years later, she returned to Roslyn and eventually graduated from Cle Elum High School in 1941. In the fall of '41, she returned to Seattle, lived with a cousin and attended business school. It was this cousin who set Josephine up on a blind date with Kenneth Ray Frandsen. It was love at first sight and wedding bells soon rang. The couple was wed on Ken's 21st birthday in 1942. At the time Ken was employed with Todd Shipyards and Josephine was working as a bookkeeper for a small local trucking company. WWII soon changed this. Ken shipped out for the Pacific while their first child, Jan was on the way. Ken returned safely from the war in 1945 and their second son, Paul was born in 1946. For a while, Josephine remained home caring for her children, but when Paul needed special shoes that the couple could not afford, Josephine returned to work taking a bookkeeping job with another local trucking company, Garfield Transfer. Two more children followed, M'Liss and Erin. Josephine worked hard at the job learning the ins and outs of the trucking and warehousing business. She eventually became the office manager and when the owner's widows decided to sell their business in the 1960's, Josephine and Ken stepped forward. In the 1970's, under Josephine's guidance, Garfield Truck Lines and its subsidiaries became one of the largest independent trucking and warehouse distributing companies in the Pacific Northwest eventually building a 300,000 square foot distribution center in Renton, WA. Long before woman's liberation, Josephine was a recognized pioneer in an all male profession. The little five-foot red-head always held her own against the toughest teamster or union agitator. In 1985 Josephine and Ken decided to retire. They built a home in 1989 at Bush Point overlooking Admiralty Inlet on Whidbey Island. Over the next twenty years, Josephine and Ken enjoyed their family, travel, golf, gardening and watching the passing ships and glorious sunsets from the deck and family room of their Bush Point home. Josephine is survived by her husband of 69 years, Kenneth Ray Frandsen and the couple's four children and spouses, Jan and Rebecca Frandsen of Renton, WA, Paul and Cheryl Frandsen of Riverside, CA, M'Liss Rae and Michael Hawley of Freeland, WA and Erin and Allen Vautier of Mukilteo, WA as well as 7 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. A funeral mass was held on March 25, 2011 at St. Hubert Catholic Church in Langley, WA.

He will be sadly missed by friends and family, from coast to coast and around the world. He is survived by his son, Jack Hoobler; parents, Jack and Gail Hoobler; grandmother, Mickey Hoobler, all of Richland, WA; and Sister Marcie Lewis of Reading, PA., If there was anything in this life that he was most certainly proud of, it was his son. His mission in life was to make sure he shared in the experiences of his life with his son Jack, not merely attending them. Camping, fishing, boating, off-roading, VW building, working at the Ranch, and then more fishing. Into that great wide open they went. Paul had a big heart but empty pockets, yet still strived to make sure Jack could have a chance to try new things ... and to learn a thing or two in the process., He was a generous spirit and quick with a joke or a jab. Although not a carpenter by trade, he was proud of the house on Roberdeau the house that he would often say 'me and my dad rebuilt.' Paul was an avid fisherman, winning accolades and awards throughout his lifetime. He could catch a 20-pounder with a piece of twine and an empty hook. And he could not only catch 'em, he could cook 'em., ... Fish On!

Philip B. Johnson

Philip B. JOHNSON Phil, aged 63, passed away with remarkable grace and courage on March 18. A native Seattleite, Phil graduated from Roosevelt HS in 1966, joined the Merchant Marine soon after, and worked on the UW campus for 33 years. Phil had a voracious appetite for the printed word. He understood the tragedy of war and he visited Gettysburg. He possessed a keen intelligence and a natural wit. Phil was particularly astute about human nature, leaving an indelible impression on the people who knew him. He conversed easily with most anyone because of his curiosity, sense of humor, and his open mind. He knew when to dress for dinnerâ€"and how to wear a fish tie. Phil sailed most of his life and weathered a storm or two. He loved Montana and Lummi almost as much as his boat, the North Dog. He was honest and loyal. Phil always gave more than he took. Phil was preceded in death by his parents, J. Edward and Catherine Sherriff Johnson, and by his birth mother, Marjorie McFaden. He is survived by his wife Carrie, brothers Rob and Bruce (Janine), niece Stephanie and grandnieces Grace and Ella, nephews Louis and Dylan, his cousin Jan (Eric) and many, many people who loved him.
