Ann House

Ann House passed away May 24, 2011 in Spokane, Wash. and was born in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, on Feb. 12, 1928. She was the daughter of Clyde and Mabelle Moore and the younger sister of Alexander Moore. The family moved to the United States during Ann's childhood, and she attended school in Wilbur, Wash., and later went to North Central High School in Spokane. While working in retail sales she met and married Dale Raymond House, and the couple married on Oct. 9, 1948. They raised six children, all of whom still reside in the area., Of the many things Ann most cherished, her lifetime of friendships were dearest to her heart. All who knew her could count on her friendship. She considered her friends as family, especially those she met through the decades of service of the Lord at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Spokane. With this church family, she worked on a number of charitable endeavors throughout the region. She held a leadership role and worked tirelessly with Church Women United during her lifetime, and she did extensive volunteer work and was very active in the many causes of St. Andrew's, including being one of the main organizers of the church's annual rummage sale for many years and working with the local Crosswalk organization. She was a nationally recognized church lay reader and frequently was a lay reader for St. Andrew's., Ann could always be counted on to help people in need, and she was looked upon as a "neighborhood mom" while she was raising her own children in Spokane. Those friendships with other children carried on throughout the years, and many of those children thought of her as a second mother or grandmother throughout their lives., Ann was a talented writer and was a published poet and short-story author. She used her writing skills to help publish the St. Andrew's newsletter and help produce a written history of the church. Among her other hobbies over the years, she enjoyed sewing, drawing, working with clay, loved playing board games with her children, enjoyed doing crossword puzzles and was an avid Seattle Mariners fan. During her courtship and early in her marriage she was an enthusiastic dancer, which seemed an appropriate marriage of interests with her husband, who was a clarinet and saxophone musician in a band when they met. Ann was a very determined person, and she kept pursuing new challenges throughout her lifetime. An example of that determined spirit was when she taught herself how to drive and also finished her education in her mid-40s after her children were nearly raised., Marion E. Hay, her great-uncle, was the seventh governor of the state of Washington from 1909-1913., Ann was preceded in death by her parents, Clyde and Mabelle Moore; by her husband, Dale, in 2006; and in 1995 by Robin (Risley) House. She is survived by her daughters Charlotte Haus, Leslie, Beth and Nancy House and Nancy's longtime partner Art Ogo, as well as her sons Dale A. and Richard "Rick" House; grandchildren Tracy Ogo, Tucker Ybarra and Nicole, Charlie and Lucas House; foster grandsons Minh, Cory, Jonathan and Brandon., A memorial service will be held Saturday, June 4, at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, 2404 N. Howard St., Spokane, Wa. 99205. Memorials may be made in Ann's honor to St. Andrew's Episcopal Church Memorial Fund or the charity of your choice. Inurnment will follow at a later date at Fairmont Memorial Park in Spokane.

Helen Louise Landsverk

Passed away peacefully on April 18, 2011 at age 88. Helen was born in Minneapolis, MN on July 20, 1922 to Paul Eric and Helen Lofthus Paulson, parents of Norwegian heritage. She was the middle child with two brothers, Dr. Eric R. Paulson and Dr. Paul S. Paulson. The family resided in Turtle Lake, North Dakota. At age 12 Helen spoke of having had a Spiritual Experience wherein God called upon her to become a missionary. She decided to study medicine and become a nurse. Music was ever present in the Paulson home and Helen often accompanied at the family piano. She loved country and folk music. As a teenager Helen purchased her first guitar for $5 from Sears & Roebuck and taught herself to play from the enclosed manual. Thus began yet another aspiration: that of a witty "singing, guitar strumming cowgirl" (she would later recall with a wink and a grin). Helen graduated from high school as class valedictorian at age 17. In 1943 she obtained her nursing diploma from Trinity Hospital School of Nursing in Minot, N.D. then joined its faculty as an Instructor. Helen worked as School Nurse at Augsburg College in Minneapolis concurrently while studying for a B.S. in Biology received in 1947. It was during her duties at Augsburg while administering vaccinations that Helen met future husband Rev. Obert J. Landsverk, a seminary student. The couple married in Spokane on December 31, 1948. Both sought to serve as Lutheran Church missionaries and were assigned to the Santal Mission in India. In 1951 they boarded a cargo ship with first born son Paul and traveled to Northeast India in the State of Bihar. During their 10 years overseas Helen and Obert had three daughters: Carol, Mary Ann and Lois Kay, all born in India. The Landsverk family returned to Spokane in 1963. Helen became Lead Instructor at the Deaconess School of Nursing for the following 10 years until its close in 1974. Helen was a gifted musician and had a beautiful natural singing voice. During the 1960's she wrote her own music and poetry inspired by India and Holden Village. As an ASCAP member she published original songs and recorded two albums, Helen Sings and Calendar of Days . She co-authored New Century World of Song: Theory and Practice in 1972. She received a M.A. in Guidance and Counseling in 1973 from Gonzaga University. As Assistant Professor at Gonzaga she designed and initiated the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program. Helen obtained an Ed.D in Educational Leadership in 1983 as part of the first doctoral graduating class at Gonzaga. She continued her nursing career with Home Health Services until her retirement at age 75. She is preceded in death by Rev. Obert J. Landsverk, older brother Dr. Eric R. Paulson and grandson Scott G. Dickinson. Remaining family members in Spokane are younger brother Dr. Paul S. Paulson (Denise), son Paul S. Landsverk (Susan), daughters Carol J. Dickinson (Walter), Mary Ann Lowe (Greg) of Tacoma and Lois Kay Landsverk (Jochen Hehl) of Bamberg, Germany. She had nine grandchildren, one great grandchild and 17 nieces and nephews. In her poem Sweet Clover , Helen reflects on her childhood in North Dakota, "The roll of the prairie, the blue of the sky, the tear in my heart, and the tear in my eye. The scent of the green and young sweet clover, I want to go back after young days are over." A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 4, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Spokane.

Laurel May Wiley

This statement made by Jesus sums up Laurel Wiley's character as it refers to those with a spirit that is free of vanity, who are willing and obedient to God's leading, and are humble and patient in affliction. It is seen as strength; not weakness. Laurel ordered her life with her commitment to God and her faith first, followed by family and friends. Linda Joyce Beck

Linda Joyce Beck died on May 22, 2011, after three years of struggle with ovarian cancer. She was 65. Linda was the light of my life and the joy of my existence for over thirty years. She was an unfailing source of kindness, love and good humor to her enormous circle of friends. She was a compassionate, caring physical therapist, who genuinely loved and respected her patients. Her reservoir of love was always overflowing; she loved more people than most of us will ever even know. A soft and gentle light has gone out. The world will be a darker place. Linda Joyce was the second child and first daughter of Roy Joyce and Marion Schneider Joyce. She was born in Kalamazoo, Michigan, on August 30, 1945. Both Roy and Marion were teachers: Marion taught art in the public school system and Roy taught biology (and fencing) at Western Michigan University. After Roy's tragic death from brain cancer in 1955, Marion moved the family to Middletown, Connecticut, where they lived with and cared for Linda's grandmother. After high school, Linda returned to Kalamazoo to attend Western Michigan University. She taught elementary school for several years, then decamped to San Francisco to experience the emerging scene. After a few interesting years and several uninteresting jobs she again transplanted herself, this time to Bellingham where - sometime in 1980 - she met Myrl Beck, whom she married on March 19, 1982. In 1985 Linda enrolled in the U.W. School of Physical Therapy, where she was by far the oldest and very likely the most popular student in her class. Upon graduation she was hired by St. Luke's Hospital, which was soon absorbed by its rival, St. Joseph's. Linda's specialty was "acute care", which means that she worked with people in a hospital setting: joint replacements, strokes, and the effects of other ravages of old age or disease. She often remarked that she loved her "old guys". All St. Joe's physical therapists are excellent, but Linda was particularly so, largely because of her immense store of compassion, patience, and good humor. One of her erstwhile colleagues recently told me that, when faced with a particularly unpleasant and uncooperative patient, he often asks himself, "What would Linda do?" Linda retired in 2008 when her medical difficulties intervened. Linda also was a master quilter. She was a member of the Moonlight Quilters guild and a smaller group of special friends called the "Crazy Eights". She is said to have been especially good at selecting fabric. This required visits to "quilt stores" (fabric shops) wherever they might be encountered - and she had a book that told her where they were. Cross-country trips with Linda could be quite lengthy affairs! She also had an immense enthusiasm for movies, as well as an encyclopedic memory for actors and scenes. Ask her "Hey, Linda who was that guy in the red shirt in that boxing movie?" and she would name the movie, name the person, and even provide details of his latest divorce! Linda is survived by her husband, by her sister Carolyn Joyce of Eureka, California, and by her brother Richard Joyce of Kalamazoo, Michigan. Both Carolyn and Richard have two children and three grand-children. Linda loved them all, and made quilts for them. She also "inherited" three step-daughters: Karen Beck, of Seattle, Linda Kelly, of Cordova, Alaska, and Kristen Beck, of Ferndale, and through Linda Kelly, three grand daughters. All of these loved her as a mother/grandmother, and she loved them in return. And, yes, they all have their own special quilt. Linda was taken from us by ovarian cancer, one of the most cruel and implacable diseases a woman can face. In lieu of flowers or other gifts, please visit the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center web site,

May Hudson

May Hudson May Hudson, born March 27, 1914 in Thurber, Texas, was the daughter of an immigrant mother and father from Czechoslovakia. With true Texas bravado, May homesteaded in Wyoming on a plot of land which the family still owns, moved to Alliance, Nebraska, where she hunted, farmed, rode motorcycles, pumped gas at the local filling station, and, in real flapper style, helped run the family dance hall. She married her high school sweetheart Leonard Hudson, a hard-working railroad man, and moved to Tacoma, Washington, where they made their home and raised their daughter, Linda. May worked for Tacoma in the Tax and License Division until retirement, was an avid bowler, winning many trophies, enjoyed the friendship of the local Railroad Retirement group, and for many years helped in her church's and Red Cross's retirees lunch program.
